“The true alchemists do not change lead into gold; they change the world into words." – William H. Gass
The scariest thing you can do to any young writer is give them a blank piece of paper and ask them to write something, without any help, guidance or support, especially if they aren’t completely engaged or excited about the task set them or the purpose behind it.
Not only that but young writers are also expected to remember every single grammar and spelling rule learned during their school life to then independently produce pieces of writing which must show that they are at ‘an expected level’ by the time they leave primary school…
My young writers needed something more - something to help take away the fear and panic behind the writing process so that they could concentrate on their creativity and expressiveness instead, without being confused or overburdened by everything the English language can throw at them.
Something they could easily grab hold of and use to find exactly what they were looking for – and what they needed - to be ‘an expected writer’ without having to wade through laminated word mat after laminated word mat…
So here it is – a handbook designed to help my young writers ensure that their writing takes off and flies…
